Wang Xu
Born in Nantong, Jiangsu province of China in 1949. Wang Xu moved with his family to Beijing at an early age. During the Cultural Revolution, he was sent to Inner Mongolia to be a farmer before completing his high school studies. Many years later he completed the Art Teacher’s Training Course in the Central Institute of Nationalities in Beijing. Over the years, he had been working as a farmer, artist, office staff, and later as a staff at Beijing Art Museum. He arrived in Australia in 1989 and gained his Bachelor of Fine Art (Honours) and Master of Fine Art at College of Fine Arts, University of NSW.
Wang Xu had exhibited internationally in Beijing, Shanghai, Kuala Lumpur, Taipei, Hong Kong and Singapore and had numerous solo and group exhibitions at National Art Museum in Beijing, Mosman Art Gallery, Art Gallery of NSW and Verge Gallery, University of Sydney among others. He was the winner of Friends Exhibition & Sale 2002, Campbelltown City Bicentennial Art Gallery and was a Finalist in the Archibald Prize at Art Gallery of NSW in 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2013; the Wynne Prize in 2007 and received the Highly Commended Award for the Sulman Prize at Art Gallery of NSW in 2012 as well as being a Finalist in 2006. He was also selected in Salon Des Refuses at S.H.Ervin Gallery in 2001 and 2006 and was a Finalist in the Mosman Art Prize in 2015 and a Finalist in the Paddington Art Prize in 2005, 2007, 2008, 2012 and 2013.
